Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic, is also a public speaker. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency which hosts videos and commentary analyzing the representation of women in pop cultural. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger and award-winning feminist for over a decade. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that explores the representations of females in the popular media narratives. She's determined to dismantle stereotypes about women and how they are depicted in pop media. In addition, she works to raise awareness about online harassment targeted at women, and other the marginalized communities of people. With a master's in the field of political and social thinking at York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after presenter and has presented speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Passionate about issues of gender and feminism since an early age she launched her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009, while still a student at the University. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s determined to make the series of videos on the internet which would explore how gender is represented in video games. In the end, she ended up being victimized by online harassment. She was not deterred by the harassment, actually, it just reinforced her desire to become an expert on media and feminism. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards for her contribution to feministism. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and is the founder of Feminist Frequency. The educational non-profit explores the role of women in pop culture narratives.
